Filters

Filters that meet the NSF/ANSI 53 standard for lead reduction are effective for removing lead from drinking water when properly installed and maintained when water is in compliance with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. Lead levels can remain elevated in household plumbing for 6 months after lead service line replacement. EPA is going to begin requiring water utilities to provide certified lead reducing filters for 6 months after lead service line replacement.

Because there are additional sources of lead in household plumbing, Benton Harbor residents should use filters for all drinking and cooking water until EGLE finds that the water treatment plant is meeting corrosion control requirements.

You can find answers to many of your questions about lead reducing filters at this page created by the University of Michigan.
